Enyimba assistant coach, Chijioke Osuagwu, said the rank and file of the club was overwhelmed with joy following Monday’s announcement of their coach, Finidi George, as the new head coach of the Super Eagles by the Nigeria Football Federation, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
Reflecting on the cheering development that was celebrated across the length and breadth of Aba, the commercial hub of Abia State, Osuagwu extolled the virtues of the former Nigerian winger, attributing the jubilation surrounding the appointment to his infectious professionalism and outstanding interpersonal relationship.
“Monday was a remarkable day at Enyimba and the entire Aba. Everybody at the club is still overwhelmed with joy over the appointment of Finidi as the new head coach of the Super Eagles. His appointment was well deserved,” Osuagwu said.
He added, “The management, the Abia State Government and the players are so happy. He is an easy-going person and is loved by all.
“He has made a mark at Enyimba by winning the Nigeria Premier Football League, and I have no doubt that he will also succeed as coach of the Super Eagles. As the interim coach of the team, he made history by defeating Ghana, which Nigeria hadn’t done in a long time.
“He has a good relationship with the coaching crew and players at Enyimba. Instead of taking money from the players, he gives them money from time to time. For instance, when he returned from the AFCON in Ivory Coast, he watered our hands.”
Finidi’s appointment was unarguably the biggest sports news in Nigeria on Monday, as the NFF finally ended its protracted search for a replacement for Jose Peseiro, whose contract with the football body expired with the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, where the Super Eagles finished as runners-up.
His immediate task is to see the team through the 2026 CAF World Cup Qualifiers, which resumes on June 2, with a home game against rivals South Africa.
