Nigerian star thrown out of Rio Olympics for using drugs, banned for 8 years

By Daily Sports on July 30, 2016

The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) has disqualified Nigerian star athlete Tosin Adeloye from participating in the 2016 Olympics scheduled to take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Adeloye was disqualified after she tested positive to a banned substance at the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) Super Grand Prix/Warri Relays which took place in Warri, Delta State, on July 24, 2015.

Adeloye was banned for eight years and all the results she has achieved, individually or jointly, has been annulled. The IAAF has also removed the times the Nigerian team ran in Beijing from the 2015 top list on its website.

Following the ban, the nation’s 4X400m relay team has also been disqualified from the games.

Other members of the Nigerian team include Regina George, Funke Oladoye, and Patience Okon-George. They came fourth at the IAAF World Championship in Beijing last August.

This also means that Regina George who laboured to raise over $4,000 through GoFundMe is also out of the game as the 4X4oom relay is the only event she was supposed to participate in at the Olympics.

The other members are still in the games as they met the qualification standard for the open 400m.
