Sports Vision has emerged winner of the 2016 edition of the Lagos State chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) Cup after defeating Voice of Nigeria (VON) 3-2 on penalties, Friday at the Legacy pitch of the National Stadium, Surulere Lagos. The match had ended 0-0 at regulation time.
The five- a-side competition (of 20 minutes per match) saw the National President of SWAN, Mr. Honour Sirawoo, grace the final day, alongside the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Nigeria Olympic Committee, Mr. Tony Ubani. Sirawoo, in his speech, thanked Lagos SWAN for standing by him during the national SWAN elections. He further said that the national SWAN “is proud of Lagos, and we hope that SWAN gets better.” He advised journalists on sincerity, saying: “Be sincere with your jobs so that you can get to greater heights.”
At halftime of the final match, Harrison Chinedu who, according to the Guinness Book of Records, holds the record for the greatest ball jogging in the air, also thrilled the fans with his skills.
Lagos SWAN Chairman Fred Edoreh thanked the journalists that participated in the SWAN Week. He also thanked the media houses for releasing the journalists to practicalise what they write about on the pitch. Edoreh said that “this week, we had looked at how to move journalism forward. There are challenges in journalism but we have looked at some ways to move forward.”
Earlier, the Nigeria Television Authority defeated New Telegraph 1-0 in the third-place match to go home with 50,000 naira. Sports Vision took home 100,000 naira and VON 70,000 naira.
For the individual awards, Abdul Balogun won the best referee of SWAN 2016, Ojo Nathaniel of Sports Vision won the best goalkeeper award, and Bayo Otu of Sports Vision won the highest goal scorer award with eight goals, while the Most Valuable Player award went to Brandom Obomano of Voice of Nigeria.
