Real Madrid midfielder, Eduardo Camavinga, has backed Angola to beat Nigeria when both sides square up in their quarter-final game of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
The Super Eagles and Palancas Negras are set to vie for a semi-final ticket when they clash on Friday at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium in Abidjan.
Nigeria beat Cameroon 2-0 in the round of 16 on Saturday to reach the last eight, while Angola thrashed Namibia 3-0 earlier in front of 28,663 fans at the Stade de la Paix.
While the Eagles are hoping to win the continental showpiece for the fourth time, it is the first time that the Black Antelopes made it to this stage of the AFCON.
Ranked sixth in Africa and 42nd in the world, the Eagles are clear favourites over the Angolans, who are ranked 28th on the continent and 117th globally.
But Pedro Gonçalves’ men have been one of the most entertaining teams at the ongoing AFCON and are beaming with confidence ahead of Friday’s clash.
Following the confirmation that Angola would face Nigeria in the quarter-finals, the country’s FA wrote on their X handle, “Bring them”.
The post, which already has over 45,000 likes and 5,000 comments, had France international Camavinga liked the post.
Camavinga’s action showed his strong link with Angola, his country of birth.
The 21-year-old, though plays for France, was born in a refugee camp in Cabinda, Angola in 2002, to an Angolan-Congolese father and a Congolese mother who fled the civil war in DR Congo.
Camavinga moved to France at a young age, eventually making his first senior appearance for the French national team in 2020 at 17, and becoming the European nation’s youngest debutant in over a century.
