I’m not Eagles No.1 keeper – Nwabali

By Daily Sports Nigeria on January 24, 2024

Super Eagles goalkeeper, Stanley Nwabali, insists he is not the team’s number one choice goalkeeper despite his impressive performance at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The South Africa-based goalkeeper already has three competitive appearances for Nigeria, conceding one goal and keeping two clean sheets.

While he was not tested against Equatorial Guinea in his first game, the Chippa United FC shot-stopper had made eight other saves in games against Ivory Coast and Guinea-Bissau and kept clean sheets on both occasions.

While it looks too early to rate the former Enyimba United goalkeeper, some fans are already tipping the 27-year-old to assume the number one role, taking over from the underperforming Francis Uzoho.

Speaking after the game against Guinea-Bissau on Monday, Nwabali said, “I am still not seeing myself as number one; I always say this. I only have an opportunity and I just want to play and give my best.”

With growing concerns over the team’s ineffectiveness in front of goal, Nwabali pleaded with fans to remain calm.

“For me, the goals will come when you have someone like Victor Osimhen; for me, we are not worried about goals but about the three points. And now we have qualified. Monday’s win (over Guinea-Bissau) is a nice feeling for me and the team,” Nwabali said.

The Eagles advanced to the round of 16 after finishing second in their Group A with seven points and will face the runners-up from Group C on Saturday as they seek to progress to the quarter-finals of the competition.
