AS Roma coach, Jose Mourinho, claims that Victor Osimhen and Romelu Lukaku are two of the best strikers in the Italian league, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
The Giallorossi host the defending Serie A champions, Napoli at the Stadio Olimpico on Saturday (today) – a game which sets up an encounter for the duo Osimhen and Romelu to meet again in the Serie A.
The previous Serie A fixture between the clubs saw Napoli come out on top 2-1 at Stadio Diego Armando Maradona last season.
Osimhen struck first for the Partenopei in the 17th minute. Giovanni Simeone also found the net. Stephan El Shaarawy scored the Giallorossi’s lone goal in the 75th minute.
Speaking ahead of the encounter, Mourinho said, “They are two excellent strikers. One links up more with his teammates, the other is more direct. They are great strikers and Serie A must be happy to have them both because they could play in any top league.”
Was Didier Drogba better than them?
“He was different. They are all different players. It’s hard to compare them. I never liked it. Osimhen is the best African player, and Didier was the best African player for many years. Lukaku’s parents are African, but he is European, so he is not in the conversation, but he still is among the best strikers in the world. We are talking about top players.”
Napoli have got the better of Roma of late, unbeaten in their last seven Serie A matches – winning five and drawing two.
Roma are looking for their first league win in fixtures between the two sides since November 2019. The Partenopei have outscored the Giallorossi 12-3 during their unbeaten streak.
Visitors Napoli have been a threat in attack courtesy of Osimhen, who has scored on seven occasions, including two match-opening goals. He is tied for fourth among the league’s top scorers in 2023/2024.
Roma have been led by Romelu Lukaku. The striker leads the club with seven goals, which is tied for the fourth highest in the league’s scoring charts, three of those having been the crucial first of the match.
At Stadio Olimpico this season, Roma have five wins, two draws, and one loss in eight Serie A contests. The Giallorossi will be out to prolong a six-match home unbeaten streak dating to September 17 against Empoli. In league matches away from Stadio Diego Armando Maradona this season, Napoli have five wins, two draws, and one loss.
In their last six league matches, Roma have won three, drawn two and lost one. Napoli, meanwhile, have won three and lost three in their last six.
