Boniface wins fifth Bundesliga rookie award

By Daily Sports Nigeria on December 21, 2023

Nigerian forward, Victor Boniface, has won the Rookie of The Month award for a fifth consecutive time this season after taking the December prize, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The 22-year-old previously won the award in August, September, October and November.

Boniface scored three goals and provided two assists in three league appearances for Xabi Alonso’s side in December.

The striker has registered nine goals in 15 league appearances for Leverkusen this season, plus another four goals in the UEFA Europa League.

Boniface and countryman Nathan Tella’s performance helped Bayer Leverkusen finish the first half of the season as honorary “winter champions” for the first time since the 2009/10 campaign after their home clash with VFL Bochum.

Before the game against Bochum, Die Werkself remain the only undefeated team in the Bundesliga and this comes off the back of Xabi Alonso’s side securing their place in the UEFA Europa League knockout stages with a 100 per cent record in the group stages, while they are also through to the quarter-finals of the DFB Cup.

Leverkusen’s 24-game unbeaten run at the start of a campaign is the longest in German history, matching Hamburg’s streak in 1982/83, while the 42 goals they have scored in the Bundesliga after 15 matches is a club record.

Their 39-point tally is also one they have never previously matched at this point of a season.

Alonso’s men have also averaged 2.6 points per game this term, which is more than any other side in Europe’s top five leagues.
