Head coach of Doma United, Akinade Onigbinde, is confident that the club can pick a continental ticket at the end of the 2023/24 Nigeria Premier Football League season despite their slow start to the campaign, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
The Savannah Tigers recorded just their second win of the season against local rivals, Gombe United, beating the Savannah Scorpions 3-0 in front of a packed Pantami Stadium on Sunday.
A brace from Emmanuel Jesam and another goal from Emmanuel Ekpeyong did the job for Doma United even as goalkeeper Kingdom Osayi also stole the show by providing both assists for Jesam.
Although they share the same home ground, the win against Gombe was an away game for Onigbinde’s side and the gaffer believes the victory will help his side build momentum as they have just seven points from five matches with two games at hand against Enyimba and Bendel Insurance.
Onigbinde maintained that the club can repeat their heroics of last season, when they took the league by storm on their topflight debut and almost qualified for the Super 6 playoffs of the abridged 2022/23 season.
“Last season was great for us and we have learnt a lot even though a lot of people didn’t give us the chance. The target we have from our owner Umar Suleiman from the start of the season is to finish second or third on the table and we know we have to work towards it,” Onigbinde told our correspondent.
“This is the kind of result that we need to build that momentum and we are very excited.”
He however admitted the tough nature of the full league, particularly the difficulty of the club anytime they have to honour a midweek game.
Doma United are now awaiting Bendel Insurance at the Pantami Stadium in a rescheduled match-day six game before they welcome troubled Akwa United on match-day eight. Victories in both games will take them up to 13 points with their game against Enyimba still to come at a later date.
