Joshua picks new trainer ahead April 1 return

By Daily Sports Nigeria on January 11, 2023

Anthony Joshua has picked his new trainer and will start his fight camp for his April 1 fight next week as the two-time heavyweight champion is aiming to bounce back after two crushing defeats to Oleksandr Usyk.

Ahead of his rematch with the Ukrainian in August, the 33-year-old opted to bring in Robert Garcia as his coach. Despite looking a lot more aggressive than in his first loss, Joshua opted to replace the renowned Garcia after he lost that bout.

He has now been searching for his next trainer, but his promoter Eddie Hearn has confirmed that the British-Nigerian has now picked the man he wants and is in the United States to train.

Hearn believes that Anthony will announce his new trainer imminently and will be in the ring in April.

Speaking to The DAZN Boxing Show on Tuesday, Hearn discussed the plans for Joshua and his reason for relocating to the US.

“I know who the new trainer is. It’s quite a personal thing really,” he said. “I think it’s for a fighter to announce that, with his new team. I speak a lot, I do a lot of interviews. I’ll speak on his fights.

“He is going to train in America and he is going to start that camp in the next week, he’ll be flying out. So you guys will get the news soon.”

Discussing on the plans for a new fight, he said, “April 1st is our targeted date in London. I’ll go through the final list of opponents. We’re almost ready. He’s excited.

“I’m happy with the trainer. I‘m happy with anyone who makes Joshua feel comfortable, motivated, and excited. I think this is going to be a nice break,” Hearn said.

The promoter said that Joshua feels more comfortable in the US which was the motivation behind the move out of UK.

“The problem is being in the UK, he can’t breathe. When he goes to America, people know he is, but it’s like a different world. I think it’s going to be really good for him. I think you’re going to see a reinvigorated Anthony Joshua,” Hearn said.
