Sporting start NPFL journey with Gombe win

By Daily Sports Nigeria on October 3, 2023

Newly promoted side Sporting Lagos treated its teeming fans to unforgettable memories as they began their campaign in the Nigeria Premier Football League with a 2-0 win over Gombe United in the last match-day one game of the 2023/24 season on Monday at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, Lagos.

Rivio Ayemwenre and Clement Naantaum were the goal scorers for Paul Offor’s side even as goalkeeper Christian Nwoke saved a penalty at the death to keep the scoreline perfect in their first ever NPFL game.

It was the first NPFL game in the heart of Lagos since the relegation of MFM FC in 2022, and a handful of fans were on ground to cheer the new Lagos for an historic victory.

Sporting began the game on the front foot, but were unable to break their visitors until the 42nd minute when Ayemwenre rose high to head home Jonathan Alukwu’s cross for their first ever goal in the topflight.

Offor’s side kept control of the game in the second half with Ayemwenre missing further chances to double Sporting’s advantage.

The coach however rang a triple change which saw Naantaum come off the bench and score the second goal in the 71st minute. The forward slotted home from close range after meeting Junior Lokosa’s miscued overhead kick to send the arena into a frenzy.
