Joshua will beat Wilder – Hearn

By Daily Sports Nigeria on August 19, 2023

Anthony Joshua’s promoter, Eddie Hearn has expressed confidence that the British-Nigerian will beat former WBC champion Deontay Wilder when the two face in a proposed Saudi Arabia clash next year.

After consecutive losses to Oleksandr Usyk, many believed Joshua’s decline was in full swing. A unanimous decision win over Jermaine Franklin wasn’t convincing enough for boxing purists, but in the wake of Joshua’s explosive seventh-round knockout victory over Robert Helenius last Saturday, there has been a rise in belief that he can conquer the boxing world once again.

Matchroom Boxing chairman, Hearn, has now stated that the former two-time heavyweight champion will triumph over Wilder in an impending bout.

“I think if he can be a little bit more aggressive with the style that he’s adopted, with the way he’s improved his feet, his movement, his defence, his distance – I think he’s gonna be, it’s difficult to say unbeatable, but I think he beats everyone. I’m so confident he beats Deontay Wilder,” Hearn told Boxing Social.

Hearn mentioned it’s “our intention to fight Deontay Wilder next” and that there’s no other opponent that Matchroom are looking at for Joshua. If it doesn’t materialize, the 33-year-old will fight someone else in December.

Wilder also secured a first-round knockout win over Helenius in his last fight in October of 2022. Wilder had come off of two straight losses to Tyson Fury. He’ll turn 38 in two months, so this could be the American’s last shot at a mega-fight.

Hearn confirmed that Saudi representatives were in London for Joshua’s win against Helenius and are hopeful of finalising a deal soon.
