Fans have taken to social media to beg for forgiveness from Asisat Oshoala’s father after the Super Falcons striker said that her dad was not happy with her choice of celebration following the team’s thrilling performance on Thursday.
The Nigerians football team shocked co-hosts Australia with a stunning 3-2 victory during their second group game.
US-based duo Uchenna Kanu and Osinachi Ohale and Oshoala were the Falcons goal scorers as Nigeria came back from a goal down to take control of Group B with four points. Randy Waldrum’s side had held Canada to a goalless draw in their first game last Friday.
Taking to her Instagram page on Friday, the five-time African Player of the Year shared photos of the memorable moment and conveyed her father’s disapproval, stating, “My dad is definitely not happy with my choice of celebration but then again, life is a collection of moments.”
The Barcelona forward, coming on as a second-half substitute, capitalized on a defensive mix-up in the 72nd minute. Demonstrating her lightning pace, Oshoala outpaced an Australian defender before confidently slotting the ball past the goalkeeper from a tight angle, propelling the Super Falcons to a commanding 3-1 lead.
The 29-year-old jubilantly removed her jersey and sprinted to the sidelines to celebrate her remarkable goal with her ecstatic teammates. Her spirited celebration earned her a yellow card.
Subsequently, Oshoala’s iconic photo from the celebration stirred intense debates on social media, with netizens expressing a mix of reactions to her actions.
In her Instagram post, some Nigerians commented with some begging her Dad for forgiveness while others hailed Oshoala’s display.
BET Award winning Nigerian musician, Folarin Falana known as ‘Falz’ wrote, “Daddy, we are sorry but o nezestry (necessary)!”
Falcons goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie joined in pleading for fogiveness from Oshoala’s dad writing, “Forgive us daddy.”
Popular actor, Adebowale Adedayo known by his stage name ‘Mr Macaroni’ congratulated Oshoala while saying he will call her Dad.
“Ore mi ni daddy. I will call him and talk to him. Congratulations. Thank you for inspiring us all,” he wrote.
Peter Okoye of P-square wrote, “Daddy no vex Abeg!”
Philanthropist and Businessman Obinna Iyiegbu known as ‘Obi Cubana’ hailed the Falcons star writing, “Onye ball.”
