Iwobi set for Everton stay

By Daily Sports Nigeria on July 6, 2023

Midfielder Alex Iwobi looks set to remain at Everton for the forthcoming season after his father Chuka dropped a hint about his future, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Iwobi, whose contract expires in the summer of 2024, was part of the players who modelled the new Everton kits for the new campaign.

“New season, new kit. Good Luck Son,” Chuka wrote on Facebook.

The Toffees had tabled a contract offer for the Nigerian but he was reluctant to make a decision until Everton’s Premier League status was confirmed.

Sean Dyche’s side managed to stave off relegation on the final day of the season, beating Bournemouth 1-0 at Goodison Park, thanks to Abdoulaye Doucoure’s second-half winner.

The Nigeria international, who has spent four years with the Toffees after completing a transfer from Arsenal in 2019, has established himself as a key part of the side, starting all 38 Premier League matches of the 2022/23 campaign.

The 27-year-old showcased his versatility throughout the season, operating in central midfield as well as in wide areas.

According to Football Insider, the former Arsenal man will decide whether to accept Everton’s proposal next week.

The Toffees paid £28m to sign Iwobi from the Gunners in 2019, plus an additional £7m in add-ons since his arrival at Goodison Park.

They will be hoping that Iwobi decides to stay and protect their investment rather than risk losing him on a free transfer next year.

Iwobi, who has 64 caps for Nigeria, featured in 149 games for Arsenal, where he worked his way through the academy ranks.

Since joining the Toffees, the midfielder has scored nine goals and provided 16 assists in 138 appearances in all competitions.
