Nigeria international Kelechi Iheanacho is confident that the win against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday will give struggling Leicester City and their fans some hope as they continue their fight to stay in the English Premier League.
The Foxes defeated the Wolves 2-1 at the King Power Stadium to keep their hopes of surviving the drop alive.
It has been a torrid time for the club and their fans having failed to win in their last 10 matches, losing nine and drawing one.
Leicester however ended their poor streak with the victory against Julen Lopetegui’s side with Iheanacho getting on the scorsheet.
The Nigerian got the equaliser in the 37th minute from a penalty spot after Matheus Cunha had given the visitors the lead before Timothy Castagne’s composed finish in the 75th minute ensure that the former Premier League champions moved out of the relegation zone and record their first win since February.
In an interview with LCFC TV, Iheanacho, whose wild jubilation was caught on camera, said the win had given everyone associated to the club some hopes.
“I think it’s mixed feelings because obviously we haven’t won in a long time and I think this gives the fans hope, the football club hope and it gives everyone hope to keep supporting, because so many people had doubted our qualities, our togetherness and our football, everything. But today we showed character to win the game,” he said.
“It’s a breath of fresh air. We really dug in well to get the three points. We really worked hard to get them. We have a strong character and obviously, when we went a goal down, we didn’t stop pressing, we didn’t stop playing.
“We kept going and kept pushing each other to get the goal. We are really happy, sticking together as a group, doing this together with everybody – the staff, the players and the fans. We’re all proud and hopefully, we keep that form in the next game.”
Leicester are currently 17th on the log with 28 points and will hope tobuild on the win when they face Leeds United on Tuesday.
