Chuba Akpom’s 23rd league goal of the season was not enough for Middlesbrough, who were forced to share the points with Stoke City after playing out a 1-1 draw at the Riverside stadium on Tuesday night, but the Nigerian forward has been hailed on social media for his goalscoring prowess in the 2022/23 season.
The 27-year-old put the home team ahead when he right footed a shot from the centre of the box to the bottom left corner on 23 minutes. The visitors equalised to end the half 1-1 and eventually the game.
With his 24th of the season, Akpom has now extended his record as the highest goal scorer for Middlesbrough in a single season.
Having claimed his own bit of Middlesbrough history in the 5-0 thumping of Reading at the start of the month, Akpom once again etched his name in the club folklore by scoring the 1000th goal from a Middlesbrough player at the Riverside Stadium.
On Twitter, Sky Sports Football wrote on their verified account, “CHUBA AKPOM CANNOT STOP SCORING! He’s the new goal scoring King of Teesside!”
A Nigerian, Paul Edokpayi, with the username, @NigerianWave, thinks Akpom has done enough to earn himself a call-up to the Eagles team, “I think Chuba Akpom would get his 1st invitation to the Nigeria national team this week. That guy is on fire.”
Agaehi Charles mirrored the sentiments of Edokpayi, stating, “The boy is on fire.”
A female fan with just the username, Victoria wrote simply, “Chuba fu*kin akpom.” hailing the talismanic striker.
A Twitter user with the handle @secondtierpod summed it up, “Chuba Akpom is the most in-form player in world football.”
