Former Super Eagles defender Ifeanyi Udeze has warned the Nigeria Football Federation against renewing the contract of the men’s national team head coach, Jose Peseiro, The PUNCH reports.
The Portuguese coach’s one-year contract with the federation expired on Monday.
The NFF announced the appointment of Peseiro as the new coach of the Eagles May 15, 2022, replacing Austin Eguavoen, who returned to his Technical Director role at the federation.
The stats and figures since Peseiro took over the Eagles’ job have not been impressive, raising doubts about his continuation as head coach of the three-time Africa champions.
Under the 67-year-old manager, who reportedly earns $70,000 monthly, the Eagles have only won three of their eight games, losing the remaining five, with the side scoring 15 goals and conceding 11.
It was also under Peseiro that the Eagles recorded their worst run in 42 years as the three-time Africa champions lost four consecutive games, including a shock 1-0 defeat to minnows and 118th-ranked Guinea-Bissau in Abuja last March in a 2023 AFCON qualifier.
Checks by our correspondent showed that the Eagles were ranked 30th in the FIFA rankings when the Portuguese took over in May 2022, but in the latest ranking released by the football governing body in April, Nigeria now ranks 40th in the world.
“I think the NFF should go for a new coach instead of renewing Peseiro’s contract,” Udeze told The PUNCH.
“When you come to coach a team like the Eagles and from the first day you are giving us the impression that you will win the Nations Cup and also qualify us for the World Cup but things are looking different, it seems somehow to me.
“I don’t even think NFF has the money to renew Peseiro’s contract or employ any other foreign coach and that is a big issue. I don’t think the money is there to do all that for now, but we will see how it goes and the ball is in their court. But let’s just sit and watch for now to see what they are going to do, but renewing Peseiro’s contract should be out of it.”
