Everton poor form affecting Iwobi contract talks

By Daily Sports Nigeria on January 26, 2023

The protracted contract extension offer for Alex Iwobi by Everton has been stalled by the poor run of the Toffees this season, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Iwobi has been one of the few positives for the Toffees this season, but has been stalling over signing a new long-term deal with the club despite ongoing talks between both parties.

The 26-year-old’s current contract is due to run out in 2024 with the Toffees, who are 19th in the Premier League table.

The Merseysiders have won just one of their last 14 matches and sacked manager Frank Lampard on Monday.

Daily Express journalist Ryan Taylor believes Iwobi who has made six assists and scored once for the Toffees will ponder on the club’s future in the topflight before committing to his long term future.

“It’s going to be a difficult decision for him to make at this moment because of the struggles of the club,” he said.

“But I don’t think signing a new deal at the club will be his priority now.”

Meanwhile, Iwobi’s recent performance has sparked debate on his future with the Merseysiders fans after his displays in the humiliating defeats against Brighton and West Ham.

Everton supporters have called on the club’s top hierarchy to stall contract negotiations with the Nigerian.

An Everton supporter, @CharlieW4780 wrote, “I’d be holding off on the new contract for Iwobi. His level has dropped as expected.

@toffeetonia also added, “After this performance, the Iwobi contract should be stalled. He is terrible, don’t extend for five years, please!”

Another Twitter user @WAJG_96 also wrote, “Iwobi is out of contract in 2024, don’t know why we’re rushing to give him a new one based on a few decent months. Lately, he is playing like he’s just signed a new long-term lucrative deal. He’s gone back to not be assessed again.”

“No new contracts until the end of the season. Can’t be justifying increasing Gordon or Iwobi’s, especially after the latter’s recent performances. All has been downhill for him and the team since he scored against Man United,” @carterdan23 said.

@efcrj added, “Iwobi been very poor since he found out he’s getting a new contract. He doesn’t deserve 100k a week, by the way, he’s back to the poor player he was.”
