Nigeria’s young export Freedom Omofoman is lighting up the second division of Finish football and showing great signs that he’s primed for a bigger stage.
The versatile player who is comfortable in a number of attacking positions was a torn in the flesh of many defences in the Nigerian league where he played for a couple of seasons for Warri Wolves. Full of dare-devil trickery laced with tantalising stepovers, Omofoman has exported his trade to Finland where news reaching Daily Sports has it that he has become a firm fans favorite of AK-Kaj, the team he plays for.
Recently, his club played against table toppers TP-47 and, against the odds, won 3-0. Omofoman was in the thick of the action, scoring a sublime goal and was named “Man of the Match”.
So far in the league, Omofoman has a healthy return of 4 goals in 7 games, his most recent goal coming on against ACK VIFK.
Speaking with Daily Sports from Finland, Omofoman expressed happiness with the progress of his game and assured that he can turn up in the near future for a more illustrious European club.
“Sure, I am (good enough for a bigger league) but Rome was not built in a day. I will say am using this as a new start for my football by coming to play in Europe. Hopefully someday I will get to the peak of my dream,” he said.
He noted that, compared to Nigeria’s, the Finish league is far better organised, with good pitches, good officiating and good players’ welfare package.
“Here you have a house paid for by the club. They pay and care for most things you do for yourself in the Nigeria league. Surely, the pay here is more than it is in most Nigeria league teams,” Omofoman said.
Continuing, he said of the attitude of clubs to players in Nigerian clubs: “They don’t care about how players care for themselves. They only care about you when they need you in a game. You don’t get your salary when it is due. There are many fine players in the Nigeria league but those running the league have to find ways of encouraging players and not frustrate them by owing them and then claim to be right when the players speak up and ask for their rights.”
Omofoman was Nigeria’s leading scorer in the maiden edition of bottling giants, Coca Cola-sponsored Copa Cup competition (an international tournament for grassroots teams in Africa) which held in South Africa in 2009.
He is a product of BJ Foundation, one of Nigeria’s leading grassroots clubs.
