Brighton star Alexis Mac Allister has opened up on his unlikely friendship with Argentina hero Lionel Messi.
While Messi was already among the most famous names in football history, Mac Allister announced himself as a global superstar as the Albiceleste triumphed in Qatar.
The little-known Seagulls foward was among his nation’s most influential players, striking up an excellent on-field relationship with Messi.
As a result of their triumph, many believe Messi has ended any debates over the greatest footballer of all time.
And Mac Allister admits Argentina were desperate to win the World Cup for their legendary talisman.
“We wanted to win that trophy for him,” he told talkSPORT.
“We knew how important it was for his career and our careers.
“But we didn’t feel pressure, even though we lost the first game, we were there and it was up to us to win it.
“The way we reacted after the first game was really important and it’s amazing what we are living now.”
The affection between Messi and Mac Allister was clear to see throughout the tournament.
As a fellow introvert, the Brighton forward reveals there is a quiet understanding between him and the PSG superstar.
“With him [Messi], I have a normal relationship,” Mac Allister added.
“I’m a shy guy and I try not to speak a lot – he is similar.
“We don’t speak too much but on the pitch we have a good connection.”
