Barcelona superstar, Robert Lewandowski has been handed a three-match ban following his red card in the game against CA Osasuna last week, according to COPE journalist, Isaac Fouto.
The 34-year-old received the first red card of his Barcelona career a week ago during the Catalans’ final La Liga clash before the World Cup break. He was sent off in the 30th-minute mark for a second bookable offence after he had already been shown a yellow card earlier in the game.
While walking off the pitch after his red card, Lewandowski appeared to make a provocative gesture towards the referee and the fourth official.
The Poland captain went on to later explain that those gestures were not intended towards the officials but instead he was interacting with his manager, Xavi Hernandez.
However, the Competition Committee has deemed it a punishable offence and issued him an additional ban of two matches on top of the one he received for his red card.
It means Lewandowski will now miss Barcelona’s first match after the World Cup against RCD Espanyol along with crucial encounters against Atletico Madrid and Real Betis.
Barça has often found it hard to produce the goods in the final third when the Poland international is unavailable. And the games against tough opponents like Atletico and Real Betis could be tricky to navigate without being able to count on Lewandowski.
The 34-year-old is the leading goalscorer in La Liga this season, having already netted 13 times in 14 matches while he also has four assists to go along with it.
