Mamelodi Sundowns strike fulcrums Khama Billiat and Keagan Dolly are expecting a physical game against Nigeria’s Enyimba in the CAF Champions League pool stage clash at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Wednesday.
Billiat, especially, was on the wrong end of some rough challenges against Algerian side Entente Setif in their last game. He even took a few cheap shots to the face that went unnoticed by the referee. But the Zimbabwean still managed to score in the 2-0 win.
He stressed the importance of mental toughness against the Nigerians: "It’s going to be a tough game. We have to be mentally strong in the face of tough challenges like the ones we received in Algeria last time out.
"The way we play and the opposition are different to what we regularly face in the league."
Dolly said: "It’s going to be a very physical game, but it’s going to be a good one. Nigerians are known for their physicality. Our guys are up to the challenge, especially playing in our backyard. We have to go for the three points."
The snag in the Brazilians’ campaign is that their win against Setif was wiped out after Caf expelled the Algerians from the competition following crowd violence.
Sundowns looked on course two weeks ago to win 2-0 before missiles were thrown and Setif fans invaded the pitch. Caf ruled that following Setif’s disqualification, the group would comprise the remaining three teams — Sundowns, Enyimba and Zamalek — and the South Africans would lose the three points they had won.
Sundowns had put on their most clinical away performance on the continent for years, but Billiat was not despondent over the fact that they now had to start over.
"Despite Setif getting eliminated, we are sticking to our plan of winning as many games as we can and do better, especially away. At home we always play at our best and we are working hard to play the same way we’ve played this season. We want to win the competition and put a star on the badge."
Sundowns also face the challenge of having a break at the end of Premiership season because Premier Soccer League and Caf schedules do not align.
While the other SA teams’ players are enjoying a winter break, coach Pitso Mosimane’s troops are hard at work.
