Israel Adesanya has given his thoughts on Nate Diaz’s win over Tony Ferguson at UFC 279.
Last Saturday night in the main event of UFC 279, Nate Diaz and Tony Ferguson went to war in a short notice fight between two legends of the sport. Both men were scheduled to take on different opponents but after Khamzat Chimaev missed weight on Friday, a chain reaction led us down the path of Diaz vs Ferguson – a bout many of us have wanted to see for quite some time.
While we didn’t exactly see the two in their prime, we did see them give everything they had in the name of getting their hand raised.
That speaks volumes about the professionalism of these competitors and in the end, after four entertaining rounds, it was the king of Stockton who pulled off a remarkable submission win to defeat ‘El Cucuy’ and close the chapter on his UFC career.
Plenty of fighters and fans were watching the contest from around the world and that includes Israel Adesanya, a man who has made his admiration of the Diaz brothers known in the past.
In the midst of a reactions video, ‘Stylebender’ couldn’t help but smile and praise what they were able to produce in Las Vegas.
Video: Israel Adesanya praises Nate Diaz vs Tony Ferguson
“That’s the s*** right there. Good job lads, great job you two, s***. Legends. Legendary.”
“What a f***ing crazy s*** show of a fight, I loved it. Diaz got it done, that was f***ing sick, shoutout to both guys and to everyone for sticking to it, man. This can’t happen in boxing, on a days’ notice.”
Even after the fight, Ferguson seemed to be happy enough with his performance with most of the praise going to Diaz and what he was able to pull off.
A new chapter
After years of speculation and waiting to see what he’s going to do next, Nate Diaz confirmed in his post-fight interview that he’ll be leaving the UFC with the Tony fight marking the final appearance on his current contract.
He hasn’t ruled out a return in the future but he quite clearly wants to try something new, most likely in another sport – with boxing being the leading contender.
Diaz is quite likely to make some of the biggest paydays of his career upon departing the UFC and considering everything he’s given to mixed martial arts, we don’t think anyone can begrudge him of that.
