Kolawole Gets Bronze • Igali Re-elected CWB Vice President
Former world champion, Odunayo Adekuoroye and Olympic bronze medallist, Blessing Oborodudu, yesterday, added to Team Nigeria’s gold medals haul at the ongoing Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. Esther Omolaye Kolawole also pitched in with a bronze medal on a day the country’s wrestlers stole the show in Birmingham.
Adekuoroye took the gold medal in the women’s freestyle 57 kg after beating India’s Anshu Malik 6-4 in the final. She thus retained the title she won at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold coast, Australia.
Not to be outdone, Oborodudu subdued Canada’s Linda Morais 5-1 to increase Nigeria’s gold medal haul to seven. Esther Omolayo Kolawale also gave Nigeria a bronze medal in the women’s freestyle 62kg category by beating Scotland’s Abbie Fountain 10-0.
Meanwhile, world and Olympic champion, Daniel Igali of Nigeria, has been re-elected as the vice-president of the Commonwealth Wrestling Board.
Igali, who is the President of Nigeria Wrestling Federation, polled 17 of the available votes to beat his closest rival from Canada who got 15 votes at a meeting of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth Wrestling Committee at the ongoing 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, to emerge one of the three vice-presidents of the body.
The mandate, which is for the next four years (2022 to 2026), will see the board improve outreach and increase its efforts for promotion and the development of wrestling within the Commonwealth.
