Senegal international Edouard Mendy is the current Chelsea first-choice goalkeeper.
This is according to Chelsea manager Frank Lampard, who praised the shot-stopper after the team played to a 0-0 draw with Sevilla in Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League game.
The 28-year-old joined the English giants from French Ligue 1 side Rennes during the recent transfer window and he was expected to serve as back-up to Kepa Arrizabalaga.
However, Spain international Arrizabalaga has been dropped from the starting line-up due to goalkeeping errors.
Lampard was impressed by Mendy’s performance against Spanish giants Sevilla at the Stamford Bridge Stadium.
“In the three games Edouard Mendy has played since he has been here he has played very well,” Lampard told the club’s official website.
“He made a good save today and that is two clean sheets. When he came in I said he will be great for competition, we knew his qualities and he has shown them.
“So at the moment he is the first choice but that is always up for grabs and that is why you have competition.”
Edouardo is also competing with Argentina international Willy Caballero in the Chelsea goalkeeping department.
The Blues recently included retired goalkeeper Petr Cech in Chelsea’s 25-man Premier League squad for the 2020/21 season.
The 38-year-old is an emergency goalkeeper and as a non-contract player, and it is a precautionary move due to the coronavirus pandemic. (African Football)
