Nigeria Football Federation boss Amaju Pinnick has insisted that there is no rush in appointing a new permanent coach for the Super Eagles.
Interim handler Salisu Yusuf, who replaced Samson Siasia in May, led the three-time African champions to defeat Mali and Luxembourg in friendly games, and is a popular contender for the job.
Despite his short successful spell, Yusuf is not guaranteed the position, with the NFF boss stressing that he would not be rushed into making any decisions regarding the managerial position with the 2018 World Cup qualifiers drawing closer.
“At the moment, everything remains temporary, I am the president of the NFF and I can tell you that emphatically,” Pinnick told media after the final of the GTBank Masters Cup at the Onikan Stadium, Lagos.
“We are weighing a lot of options and in few weeks time, we are going to come out to announce who the substantive coach for the Super Eagles.
“In as much as we are weighing a lot of options, we are not leaving the doors closed. We are still working with the coaches that are there, we are looking at their adequacies and inadequacies, we are also looking at appraisals.
“My dream is to have a Nigerian coach any day and anytime but it goes beyond technical competence on the field. What about managerial ability and what about charisma?
“As a match commissioner, I engaged some of the players in Ghana and they told me Avram Grant spent 18 hours with 18 players, that is one hour per player. Do our coaches have the ability to do that?
“We don’t want to make any mistakes. Even if we are playing the same World Cup qualifying group as Egypt and Algeria, I can assure you Nigeria is going to qualify by God’s grace.
“I want to assure Nigerians that whoever we will appoint be it Nigerian or foreign coach would be in the best interest of Nigerian football,” he concluded.
Having been pooled into Pot 2, Nigeria will know their opponents in the 2018 World Cup qualifiers on Friday.
