Denmark star Christian Eriksen collapsed on the pitch in Saturday’s Euro 2020 game against Finland in Copenhagen, causing the suspension of the match in the first half and for some 90 minutes.
Danish players were in tears as medical staff tried to revive the Inter Milan player, who suddenly collapsed near the touchline.
“The UEFA EURO 2020 match in Copenhagen has been suspended due to a medical emergency,” UEFA said in a short statement.
The previously raucous crowd at the Parken Stadium in the Danish capital fell silent after the 29-year-old fell to the ground near the end of the opening period, with his teammates gathering around him.
After around 15 minutes Eriksen was stretchered off the field followed by the rest of the Denmark team, while Finland’s players also left the pitch.
The fans in the stadium, who were celebrating the chance to see their national team again live at the stadium, sat silently in their seats waiting for news of Eriksen’s condition to filter through.
The match was later restarted after the 29-year-old's condition was "stabilised", according to tournament organisers Uefa.
The Group B match in Copenhagen restarted at 19:30 BST.
"Following the request made by players of both teams, Uefa has agreed to restart the match between Denmark and Finland," said a statement from the organisers.
"The last four minutes of the first half will be played, there will then be a five-minute half-time break followed by the second half.
"The match has been suspended due to a medical emergency which involved Denmark's Christian Eriksen. The player is now in hospital and in a stable condition.
"Uefa wishes Christian Eriksen a full and speedy recovery and wishes to thank both teams for their exemplary attitude."
Referee Anthony Taylor immediately called for medical support and Eriksen received CPR before the players were taken off the pitch and the match was postponed.
Uefa said that his condition had "stabilised" after being taken to hospital.
The incident happened as a throw-in was played towards him near the end of the first half.
His distressed team-mates surrounded him and the shocked supporters at Parken Stadium were visibly upset as the player was treated.
Saturday's other Group B match between Belgium and Russia, scheduled for 20:00 BST, will take place as scheduled.
Eriksen's club, Inter, tweeted: "Forza Chris, all of our thoughts are with you."
Former team Tottenham said: "Get well soon, Christian. The whole Spurs family is with you."
Last month, Eriksen helped Inter Milan clinch their first Italian title for 11 years in his first full season with the club, after joining from Spurs for £16.9m in January 2020.
The Ajax youth player spent seven years with Tottenham, scoring 69 goals in 305 appearances.
