As the death of former Super Eagles Chief Coach, Stephen Keshi continued to attract lamentations worldwide, death struck again in Nigerian football family, this time taking away yet another former handler of the team, Shauibu Amodu.
Amodu’s death has been described as one too many by former FIFA and CAF Instructor, Chief Adegboye Onigbinde, who incidentally had both men work under him at various times.
Onigbinde, speaking on phone with Daily Sports, lamented the tragedy of seeing people he helped to develop going one after the other.
The Modakeke High Chief said: “How will you explain it that within one week two very intelligent gaffers have left us without notice? It’s too painful to bear and difficult to believe also. It is not only shocking and sad but calls for deep sober reflection.
“To be sincere to ourselves, what has been befalling our football of late calls for great concern and we must seek for God’s intervention and mercy. We are yet to come to terms with the bad news on Keshi’s demise . . . and now this. I am not finding it too easy to speak with you at all. He was a fine gentleman and workaholic. He did his best for the development of the game and players in the country. In a nutshell, he was a great patriot.”
The former Super Eagles Technical Adviser said that it is a bad omen to coaching in the country that some of its finest hands are gone in quick succession.
Onigbinde expressed deep grieve at the sudden death of people to whom he handed over the coaching baton and in whose successes he took great delight. “Where do you expect me to get happiness from?” he asked, saying: “I am really pained again; just few days ago the rude shock of Keshi’s death is yet to subdue. Where do we go from here? The cloud is thick!”
Daily Sports recalls that Amodu was Head Coach of the Super Eagles to Mali 2002 and Angola 2010 AFCON. He also qualified Nigeria for the Japan/Korea 2002 and South Africa 2010 World Cups.
Amodu, a veteran gaffer who made his mark in club football with the defunct BCC Lions of Gboko, was until his death a technical director with the NFF. He would also be remembered as the only Nigerian coach that qualified his country for two World Cup finals without leading or being on the bench with the team at the venue.
