Striker Umar Sadiq will be hoping to help Spanish Segunda table-toppers Almeria maintain their lead when they file out against 17th-placed Lugo on Monday (today).
Sadiq, who recently rediscovered his scoring form after going seven league games without a goal, has scored in his last two appearances in the league and Copa del Rey.
The former Nigeria U-23 forward has scored nine goals for Almeria this season in 21 appearances across all competitions, with eight of them coming in the league.
Almeria are currently six points ahead of second-place Eibar but should they get a win against Lugo, on Monday, they will take a nine-point lead into the New Year as they hope to return to the LaLiga, while picking the automatic slot reserved for the first-place team.
Sadiq’s form in both the 2020/21 and ongoing campaign has seen him linked to several topflight sides, including English Premier League club Newcastle, who are looking to avoid relegation after being bought over by the Saudi Public Investment Fund.
Almeria manager, Rubi, says although their opponents will be difficult, the players will head into the game with confidence. He said, “We’re going to Lugo with great enthusiasm and confidence.
“They always give it their all in the games. I think they’re definitely one of those teams that you need to have a hard time before beating them.” (The PUNCH)
