Ex-Stars Task ‘Unserious’ Eagles To Sit Up

By Daily Sports on November 19, 2021

Ex-internationals, Ishola Shaibu and Uche Akubuike, say the Super Eagles must improve on their performance in the play-offs for Qatar 2022 World Cup billed for March 2022, The PUNCH reports.

The Eagles put up a lacklustre performance in their 1-1 draw against Cape Verde in their final Group C qualifier for Qatar 2022 on Tuesday at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos, but the result was enough to see them through to the more competitive play-offs, after finishing top of the table.

The three-time African champions were largely unimpressive during the group stage qualifiers, winning just one home game, and losing to Central African Republic before Lagos fans.

They may likely face tougher oppositions like Egypt, Cameroon, Ghana, Mali or DR Congo in the play-offs.

Ex-Eagles goalkeeper Akubuike said the current side had to improve on their performance, if they hoped to seal a spot in Qatar next year.

“The way they played against Cape Verde, they didn’t show any seriousness but I’m happy we qualified,” Akubuike told The PUNCH.

“What’s next is the play-offs to qualify, but we must work on our overall performance.

“The play-offs will be difficult. Football in Africa has gone past names and reputation, so we have to be better to qualify.”

Former forward Ishola added, “I’m happy they’ve qualified for the next round, it’s now time for the coach to work on his tactics. I know there’s a lot of pressure but he needs to do better in the next round.”
