Segun Oduduwa to miss Rio Olympics with knee injury – goal.com

Nigeria U-23 defender Segun Oduduwa will be sidelined for about eight months with an injury to his knee which means he will miss the 2016 Olympic Games.

Oduduwa, was dropped late from the 20-man squad picked by coach Samson Siasia to the Suwon Invitational tournament after he copped the injury at training.

The Nath Boys FC player suffered the injury following a bad tackle in one of the Dream Team VI's training sessions at the practice pitch of the National Stadium, Abuja.

After he underwent series of tests on the injury, medical officials confirmed that the defender will be out for around eight months.

"Oduduwa will be out for a minimum of eight months," the sports ministry’s medical director Abdulkadir Muazu confirmed to media following the visit of top officials to the player at his hotel room in Abuja on Wednesday.

Oduduwa subsequently misses Rio 2016 where the Dream Team VI will feature in Group B of the men's tournament against Sweden, Colombia and Japan.

The sad development will be a huge blow to coach Siasia who had hoped to have one of his reliable defenders for the Olympics despite already missing him at the Suwon tourney.

The 20-year-old featured for Dream Team VI at the All–Africa Games in Brazzaville and the CAF U-23 Championship in Senegal, where they sealed a ticket to the Olympics as champions.
