Ryan Giggs is ready to walk out on Manchester United and prove himself as a manager after deciding to reject Jose Mourinho’s offer to join his coaching staff, according to reports.
Giggs served as assistant manager to Louis van Gaal, having replaced David Moyes on an interim basis as manager at the end of the 2013/14 season. Having worked with Van Gaal for the duration of his two-year reign, Giggs was hopeful of succeeding the Dutchman when he was sacked last month, only to discover that Mourinho would be getting the job instead.
Giggs departed on a holiday to Dubai the day after United’s FA Cup final success, but is due to return to hold talks with Mourinho regarding his future at the club.
After spending 29 years of his life associated with United as both a player and assistant manager, Giggs in known to be unhappy with the prospect of being demoted from his role as No 2. Mourinho will bring in his regular assistant in Rui Faria, having worked with the 40-year-old Portuguese coach throughout his career.
Mourinho is believed to have offered Giggs the chance to stay at Old Trafford in a role that would bridge the gap between the youth set-up and the senior team, but Giggs looked unfavourably on the position and saw it as an obvious demotion from his job under Van Gaal.
The Mirror reports that the talks with Mourinho have led the club legend to decide that the time is right to leave United and forge his own managerial career elsewhere, having grown frustrated by the two missed chances to become United manager. After making 963 appearances for the club before he retired in 2014 to take up the assistant job under Van Gaal, Giggs finally appears to be heading for the Old Trafford exit, something which could see the club face another mini-backlash from fans who have adored the Welshman during his time there.
