Mendy Reveals Secret Behind Success At Chelsea

By Daily Sports on September 21, 2021

Senegalese goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has revealed the secret behind his success at European champions Chelsea FC.

The towering player has established himself as one of the best keepers in Europe since he joined the Premier League giants from French side Rennes in September 2020.

Mendy won the UEFA Goalkeeper of the Season in 2021 after playing an instrumental role in helping Chelsea clinch last season’s UEFA Champions League title.

“When you play for this kind of club, you will find big competition [for places], a big fight for playing,” Mendy told the club’s official website.

“You can see it at Manchester City and at Liverpool – two good goalkeepers who are ready to play.”

Mendy is competing with the world’s most expensive keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga and Marcus Bettinelli in Chelsea’s goalkeeping department.

“So you have to be the best for yourself but for the team also because when the coach [Thomas Tuchel] puts you on the pitch, you have to show why he called you,” he added.

“Every time you have to show it, and you have to push each other at training. It’s competition and Kepa [Arrizabalaga], me or Marcus [Bettinelli], we want to be the best for the team.”

Mendy equalled the record held by Santiago Cañizares and Keylor Navas for most clean sheets in a Champions League season with nine.

He was also named in the UEFA Champions League Squad of the Season for the 2020–21 campaign. (African Football)
