Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) president Amaju Pinnick has revealed that football fans will soon be allowed back into stadiums.
Nigeria, like most of the rest of the world, has been playing their football behind closed doors to prevent matches becoming super-spreader events in the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
However, the NFF boss has revealed that an upcoming cup tournament will see a return of supporters to stadiums.
“The AITEO Cup finals which is coming up in the next three to four weeks will have 50 percent of fans allowed into the stadiums,” Pinnick is quoted by Nigeria’s Guardian.
“We have to, however, liaise with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and the Federal Ministry of Health to ensure the safety of our fans.”
The AITEO Cup, Nigeria’s equivalent of the FA Cup, was cancelled in 2020 due to the pandemic. The 2019 champions were Kano Pillars, who defeated Niger Tornadoes on penalties in the final.
The tournament has been running since 1945, with Shooting Stars the most successful team after winning eight titles. (African Football)
