Okocha Named One Of EPL’s Cult Heroes

By Daily sports on May 2, 2021

English Premier League legend Alan Shearer has praised Nigerian Jay-Jay Okocha as one of the biggest cult heroes in the history of the competition.

Shearer, who recently joined Thierry Henry as the first inductees into the Premier League Hall of Fame, told BBC’s Match of the Day Top 10 podcast that Okocha should be remembered as one of the all-time fan favourites.

The former England striker named Okocha as one of his top 10 Premier League cult heroes, with the Super Eagles legend joining Faustino Asprilla, David Ginola, Chris Waddle, Mario Balotelli, Paulo di Canio, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Paul Gascoigne, Matt le Tissier and Eric Cantona on the list.

“He [Okocha] made the difficult things look easy – I must’ve tried that flicking over heads a million times and it’s never come off once,” said Shearer. “Gifted, natural ability, superb player.”

Former England defender Micah Richards added that he used to idolise Okocha and labelled the Nigerian as one of the most skilful players he has seen.

He said: “I’ve watched him a lot, he’d just flick it over players’ heads and he was so calm with it, he’s one of the most skilful I’ve seen and he’s loved in Bolton.”

Okocha played for Bolton Wanderers from 2002 to 2006, leading the Trotters to the League Cup final as captain in 2004, though they lost out to Middlesbrough in the final. (African Football)
