Chris Giwa faction vows to assume duties at NFF today

The Chris Giwa-led faction of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) says its board will now assume duties on Tuesday at the football body’s Glass House secretariat in Abuja

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that this was after its earlier plan of taking over on Monday failed.

Giwa, the factional NFF President, had told newsmen on Friday during his familiarisation tour of the football secretariat that he would assume duties on Monday.

The group, however, in a statement signed by Effiong Johnson, its Chairman of Chairmen, said it was putting finishing touches to its programme of activities.

“We promised the nation to be in the office today (Monday).

“However, the board has decided to hold its meeting to deliberate on our programme of activities and how to use football to develop and employ our youths.”

It urged members of the media not to allow themselves to be used by people who believe in spreading falsehood.

“Journalism’s principles of fairness, balance and neutrality should be embraced at all times.”

Meanwhile, journalists waited between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. for the arrival of Giwa and his group at the NFF secretariat but this did not happen.

They (journalists) were also denied access into the premises, while other football stakeholders and visitors were screened before they could gain entry.

Policemen from the Wuse Zone 3 police station positioned themselves in a marked Hilux van and three saloon cars in front of the entrance housing the NFF and the FRSC.

NAN reports that Sunday Irek, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Wuse Zone 3 police station, had on Friday invited Giwa for questioning after his familiarisation tour.

Irek, a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), who arrived with some other policemen, entered Giwa’s Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) which drove straight to the station.

Giwa was later told to go home the same day. (NAN)
