Victor Boniface scored his second Bundesliga brace for Bayer Leverkusen who maintained their perfect start to the season – and moved top for the time being – with a 5-1 win over Darmstadt at the BayArena on Saturday.
Boniface has now scored five goals in four appearances in all competitions since joining Leverkusen this summer. He has four in three in the Bundesliga, all of which have been scored across his last two outings.
Boniface, whose hot form is widely expected to be rewarded with a Super Eagles call-up this week, opened scoring in the 21st minute with a brilliant individual goal.
He completed his brace in the 61st minute for Bayer 04 to lead 3-1.
He also assisted for his team’s fourth goal in the 67th minute. Leverkusen now have nine points from their first three games of the new Bundesliga season.
His countryman, Nathan Tella also came on in the 72nd minute for Jeremie Frimpong. The former Southampton winger had one shot on target when he came on.
In the English Premier League, the duo Taiwo Awoniyi and Ola Aina were instrumental to Nottingham Forest’s hard-fought 1-0 victory over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
Summer signing Anthony Elanga who came on as a second half substitute, struck shortly after the break when he raced on to Awoniyi’s pass to score the winner in the 48th minute. In defence, Aina timely block denied Raheem Sterling a chance to score in the first half. Aina who was making his third appearance played for 73 minutes before he was replaced by Nuno Tavares.
At the Gtech Community Stadium, Frank Onyeka made his second substitute appearance of the season for Brentford who needed Bryan Mbeumo’s stoppage time equaliser to secure a 2-2 at home to Bournemouth on Saturday. The 25-year-old Nigerian came on for Vitaly Janelt in the 71st minute for his 50th game for the club.
In Italy, the duo Isaac Success and Festy Ebosele an Irish player of Nigerian decent came on as substitutes for Lorenzo Lucca and Joao Ferreira after the hour mark for Udinese in their goalless draw at home to Frosinone. Maduka Okoye was an unused substitute for the game.
Victor Osimhen failed to sparkle for Napoli who were beaten by Lazio. The Partenopei lost 2-1.
In Spain, Umar Sadiq, replaced Mikel Oyarzabal in the 79th minute as Real Sociedad ran out 5-3 winners over Granada to earn their first win of the season and extend their unbeaten home record to 12 games. The game was Sadiq’s third substitute appearance this season.
