Nigeria head coach Gernot Rohr says his captain Ahmed Musa should find a new club before their 2022 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
The Super Eagles are scheduled to take on the Benin and Lesotho in their last two 2022 AFCON qualifiers, but Musa remains a free-agent since October 2020.
The 28-year-old winger terminated his contract with Saudi Arabian side, Al Nasser, by mutual agreement and he has been searching for a new club.
English Premier League club West Bromwich Albion have already confirmed their interest in Musa and Rohr also disclosed that the player is currently in England
“We are in touch with our captain, he is in the United Kingdom now,” Rohr said on Goal.
“It’s not so easy to change during the season but he is free to sign where he wants and there’s no obligation to respect the transfer window for him because he was free already.
“I am very hopeful that he can sign in the next few days, he wanted to come back to Europe and to play in England so it’s not easy during the season but I’m hopeful that he can sign in the club,” he added.
“It’s very important that everybody is playing in their clubs. It’s a long time that he didn’t play, I think since October, so he needs now to come back in the rhythm of the matches.”
Musa had two years left on his contract with Al Nassr, who are perennial Saudi Professional League title contenders.
During his time with the Najd Knights, Musa won the Saudi Professional League title in the 2018/19 season and the 2019 Saudi Super Cup.
