Six clubs from the three senatorial zones in Anambra have qualified for the final stage of the maiden ‘My Anambra Football Super8 Tournament’ in Anambra.
A total of 27 amateur football clubs participated in the play-off stage of the competition from Feb. 1 to Feb. 3, sponsored by Aspire FC, Adazi-ani, an Anambra based amateur club.
Oliver Ndigwe, a member of the Anambra State Football Association (AnSFA) and Chairman of the Super8 Tournament, said this in an interview News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Awka on Thursday.
Ndigwe said the two teams that would join the six teams in the finals would be announced after comparing match statistics to get the best losing sides.
He said the teams that had advanced to the next stage were GP World FA Nnewi; Smith City FC Awka; Pope JohnPaul FC of Okpuno; Golden Boys FC of Onitsha; Ifechukwu FC of Omor and Ranges FA of Achina.
He said that two teams qualified from each of the three senatorial zones of the state having emerged tops in their various groups.
NAN reports that the three-day soccer fiesta was held simultaneously in four venues of NEROS Stadium, Nanka; Chuba Ikpeazu Stadium, Onitsha; Awka Stadium, Awka and Anambra Polytechnic football field, Mgbakwu.
Ndigwe said the Super8 was an indication that Anambra was full of talented footballers who had been looking for where to display their skills.
He said the quality of the competition was high and impressive in spite of the challenge of poor playing arenas.
He said of all the venues used, only NEROS stadium met acceptable minimum standard for a competitive football, appealing to the state government to take drastic measures to address the problem of sports facility.
“It has been a great tournament, thanks to Aspire FC, the sponsor.
“We now have six teams out of the eight we are looking for in ten finals property, the other two will be determined on best loser basis and they will be announced soon,” he said.
“Rev. Fr. Obinna Dike, Director of DOSAD FA, has congratulated the teams for their cooperation in the competition, while applauding officials for a good job.
“A word of praise too to the sponsor of the tournament, the FA, the referees, organising committee, the media, fans and well wishers,” he said. (NAN)
