Nigeria national team manager Gernot Rohr says there will be stiff competition for places in his squad for upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
The Super Eagles will wrap up their qualification campaign for next year’s AFCON with matches against Benin (away) and Lesotho (home) in the second half of March.
Nigeria top the group with eight points and need only a draw in their first game against the Squirrels to secure a berth in the finals.
Rohr has admitted that he wished Nigeria’s locally-based ‘B’ team was playing in the ongoing African Nations Championship (CHAN) in Cameroon, but nonetheless believes that the return of some key players from injury will make selecting a team a tough job.
“We are watching the league games with the NPFL link,” Rohr is quoted by The Nation. “We are also actually watching the CHAN competition in Cameroon where our local players unfortunately did not qualify.”
The Super Eagles boss added, “The decisive qualifiers will come soon and it’s the moment to count on our complicity. [Wilfred] Ndidi, [Samuel] Kalu, [Moses] Simon, [Oghenekaro] Etebo and others will be back after injury and make the competition for the starting team very interesting.”
Rohr has been in charge of Nigeria’s national team since 2016 and guided the team to 2018 World Cup qualification and a third-place finish at the last AFCON in Egypt. (African Football)
