Odegbami Lauds Obi For Commitment To Caring For Ex-Rangers Footballers, As Obi Celebrates ‘Chairman’ Chukwu At 70

Ex-Nigerian international footballer and host of The Sports Parliament, a popular TV show on NTA, Segun Odegbami, has praised the Vice Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during the 2019 elections, Mr. Peter Obi, for his continued commitment to the welfare of ex-Rangers players.

Speaking at a special edition of The Sports Parliament dedicated to marking the 70th birthday of legendary former national team skipper and coach, Christian Chukwu, Odegbami said Obi was the only governor who took care of the elderly ex-footballers, and continued to do so even after leaving office. He appreciated Obi for such uncommon kindness and urged him to continue spreading the love.

Speaking during the programme, Obi said it was his personal resolve to always appreciate those who had contributed to a better society in different fields of endeavour, especially the elderly ones. He noted that ex-Rangers footballers all made the nation proud and contributed greatly to sports development in the nation.

Celebrating ‘Chairman’ Chukwu, Obi described his 70th birthday celebration as an opportunity to tell his stories of success and patriotism in the field of sports. Obi recalled how Chukwu, alongside other youngsters, like Dominic Ezeani, were selected into the school football academy from National Grammar School, Nike, Enugu State.

“Chukwu’s humility and passion for football paved way for him and he was subsequently admitted into the Rangers Football Club and then into the Nigeria’s National Team, Green Eagles. Chukwu continued to excel in his football career leading his teams to victories as the captain,” Obi recounted.

The former Anambra State Governor promised to take the birthday celebration to Chukwu’s house and further appreciate him for his great roles in Nigeria’s sports development. Obi made good his promise by visiting Christian Chukwu at his residence in Enugu State.

Speaking to newsmen via a telephone interview, Obi said people like Christian Chukwu deserved to be celebrated by the entire country, considering the honour they have brought to the nation. Obi prayed God to continue to bless Chukwu with good health and happiness.
