Sunshine Queens FC of Akure, on Wednesday, defeated Confluence Queens of Lokoja on day two of the Nigeria Women Professional Football League (NWPL) played at the Ondo State Sports Complex, Akure.
Sunshine Stars Midfielder, Seun Fakunle put the home team ahead in the 8th minute with her second goal of the season.
The first half ended 1-0 with little or no chances being created by both teams to improve the score line.
Second half had barely started when Sunshine Queens’ Skipper increased the tally in the 59th minute for the home team, sealing victory at 2-0.
The Commissioner for Youth and Sport Development, Dotun Owanikin, said he was happy with the performance of the team, revealing that the team was assembled only a week before the league.
“This is a team we just nurtured for a week and half, to me this is a very good start for the team,” he said.
Owanikin said the team won on individual performance, which he had already discussed with the technical crew, expressing his belief that the team’s performance would improve subsequently as they continue playing together.
Sunshine Stars Midfielder, Seun Fakunle said the game was not easy, especially as players were just getting along with the game after a long break caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Sabo Okala, Head Coach of Confluence Queens, said he believed his team would be at the top of the first stanza of the league, because “I have players who can give me what we want.”
Sunshine Queens now have three points and will be away to Delta Queens on match day three of the NWPL. (NAN)
