The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is considering dragging CAF before the Court of Arbitration in Sports (CAS) over the 2017 AFCON qualification.
President of the NFF, Amaju Pinnick, explained that the rules applied by the African football governing body, CAF, following the withdrawal of Chad from Group G of the Africa Cup of Nations qualification was unfair to Nigeria's Super Eagles which led to their failure to qualify for the 2017 tournament in Gabon.
Pinnick also revealed that he would meet with CAF president Issa Hayatou in the coming days to intimate to him the decision that Nigeria wants to take on the matter.
"We will take them to CAS. Before we take them to CAS, first we will interpret the law because CAS will look at global laws. It is standard rules. CAF cannot bring out rules when a tournament is being played. That is not being fair to other teams. What is the procedure for bringing out rules? The CAS organising committee was supposed to propose (rules) if a team pulls out. We might contest this in CAS because ordinarily when a team pulls out, it is only when they are playing in a league (format), but if they are playing in a round-robin you add up all the points, you just surcharge the points.
"We will not just react to that. But first I am going to see Hayatou and tell him that this is the position we are going to take by taking CAF to CAS," said Pinnick.
Nigeria failed to qualify for the 2017 AFCON following a 0-1 loss to Egypt in Alexandria on Tuesday after CAF had deducted all points involving Chad who withdrew from the competition citing a lack of funds. (supesports.com)
