Ex-National Team Captain Attacks Referee During Match

By Daily sports on August 14, 2020

A former captain of the Russian national football team, midfielder Roman Shirokov, is under investigation for beating up a referee during an amateur match in Moscow this week.

Shirokov, 39, was filmed punching the referee in the face, knocking him to the ground, and then kicking him in the head, after he was red carded in the match.

The referee, Nikita Danchenkov, said in a video address that he had been hospitalised for several hours after the incident. He was visibly injured, with two lacerations and a black eye.

Shirokov apologised for the incident in a statement on his Instagram page, saying: “I would like to express my sincere apologies to Nikita for such an inappropriate act committed by me.”

Police are conducting an investigation into the incident, following a complaint by the victim’s family, state media reported.

Shirokov’s lengthy professional career included a spell at Zenit St Petersburg, where he won the 2008 UEFA Cup, and saw him picked 57 times for Russia. (dpa/NAN)
