PSG Keen To Replace Silva With Matip

By Daily sports on August 4, 2020

Former Cameroon international Joel Matip has reportedly attracted interest from French champions Paris Saint Germain (PSG).

The towering central defender is coming off a successful 2019/20 season in which he helped English champions Liverpool FC clinch three trophies, Premier League, FIFA Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup.

Matip, who has retired from international football, is said to be on the radar of PSG ahead of the 2020/21 campaign according to Kick442 Cameroon, having joined the Reds in 2016 from German side Schalke.

“French Ligue 1 side PSG are monitoring the situation of 28-year-old Cameroon defender Joel Job Matip of Liverpool FC. Kick442.com understands the French Club are considering him as a replacement for Thiago Silva.”

“Matip endured a difficult season at Anfield featuring in few and far between fixtures as injuries blighted his desire to give more in Liverpool’s historic domestic championship success campaign.”

“[PSG manager Thomas] Tuchel and German-born Matip are linked by the Cameroonian’s nation of birth and the gaffer is a keen admirer of players with German origin as justified by some of his signings since he came to the French capital,” a report read.

The 28-year-old player has made 111 competitive appearances for Liverpool and scored five goals and he is usually partnered with Dutch defender Virgil Van Dijk at the heart of the Reds’ defence.

He signed a new five-year contract with the Merseyside giants in October 2019 which means he still has four more seasons on his deal with the club. (African Football)
