Why French Club Brest Rejected Yaya Toure

By Daily sports on October 24, 2020

Former Ivory Coast captain Yaya Toure was rejected by French Ligue 1 side Stade Brestois 29.

This is according to Brestois’ sporting director Gregory Lorenzi, who explained that Toure’s presence in the team would unsettle the club.

Toure, 37, was once of the best midfielders in the world and he has been a free agent since he left Chinese club Qingdao Huanghai earlier this year.

Lorenzi revealed that they had an opportunity to sign the four-time African Player of the Year.

“Yaya Toure was not necessarily what we were looking for,” said Lorenzi on Sport Mania.

“I spoke with people who saw this idea as interesting because it could make people talk about Brest.

Brestois, who are under the guidance of French manager Olivier Dall’Oglio, finished the 2019/20 season on the 14th spot on the Ligue 1 standings.

“But I was wondering, facing my coach, if a player like that could be easy to handle in the dressing room,” he added.

“With regard to the other [squad] players, it could have been complicated so we preferred not to follow up.”

The former Manchester City and FC Barcelona central midfielder has also been linked with Brazilian clubs Vasco Da Gama and Botafogo.

He has earned 101 caps for the Ivory Coast from 2004 to 2015, representing the nation at the 2006, 2010 and 2014 FIFA World Cup tournaments. (African Football)
