The Algerian Football Federation have announced that the remainder of the country’s top-flight 2019-20 Ligue 1 season has been scrapped, with the current standings recognised as final.
This sees CR Belouizdad set to be declared as champions, while the bottom pair of NA Hussein Dey and NC Magra will be spared relegation.
Instead, Ligue 1 will expand from 16 teams to 20 for 2020-21, with the top four from Ligue 2 – Olympique Medea, JSM Skikda, WA Tlemcen and RC Relizan – being promoted.
This will see the Algerian top flight have 38 matchdays for the first time since 1986-87.
Belouizdad will be joined by ES Setif in representing the country in the CAF Champions League next season, while MC Alger qualify for the Confederation Cup.
Algeria’s Ligue 1 was suspended in March due to the coronavirus pandemic and the Federation held a ballot (in which 96 out of 112 members participated) to determine the future of the uncompleted season.
The results saw over 90 percent of voters side with ending the season as is, without relegation. (African Football)
