Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) newcomers Ikorodu United continued their poor run on Sunday, losing 2-3 to visiting Rivers United at the Onikan Stadium, thus making the boys from Port Harcourt the only team to win on the road on Matchday Nine.
Guy Kuemian put Rivers United ahead in the ninth minute of the match before Ifeanyi Ojukwu made it 1-1 for Ikorodu United just before the quarter of an hour. Nonso Okonkwo and Wilson Andoh both scored for Rivers United to make it 3-1 against the 2016 NPFL whipping boys just before halftime. Ojukwu struck again in the second half for Ikorodu United, but all efforts to even scores proved abortive.
Meanwhile in Jos, Plateau State, Lagos’ second rep in the top flight, Mountain of Fire and Miracles Football Club (MFM FC) continued their brilliant run in their first season in the NPFL, securing a second 1-1 draw in five days (after the 1-1 draw against Kano Pillars in Agege). Adegboyega Adekunle had put MFM FC ahead in the 45th minute, before Reuben Bala made it 1-1 for hosts Plateau United.
After Matchday Nine hostilities, Enugu Rangers are first on the table with 17 points after nine matches; Kano Pillars second with 15 points after eight matches, and MFM third, also with 15 points after nine matches (goal difference separating Kano Pillars and MFM FC).
On the lower part of the table, Sunshine Stars of Akure are 17th with six points after five matches, defending champions Enyimba are 18th with six points after five matches, Ikorodu United 19th with five points after nine matches, with Nasarawa United bringing up the rear in the 20th place with three points after five matches.
