Finidi George Wary Of Coaching In NPFL

By Daily Sports on July 10, 2020

Former Super Eagles winger Finidi George says he would need guarantees before agreeing to work in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) as a coach.

The 49-year-old has applied for a position with the national team, but is wary of working with domestic clubs due to their reputation of being slack when it comes to paying their coaches and players.

“I have to get a guarantee that salaries will be paid and that players will be taken care of,” Finidi George is quoted by The Guardian. “I wouldn’t want problems in the area of payment of salaries and traveling conditions.”

George played for the likes of Ajax, Real Betis and Mallorca in his career, while his time with the Super Eagles included a triumph at the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations and appearances at the 1994 and 1996 World Cups.

“It is not that we [George and his fellow legends] are not willing to coach any team in Nigeria but for me, if I have to coach, there must be guarantees,” he explained.

“I do not know if clubs are willing to do these. You know that most of them are government-run clubs and sometimes you have problems like these.

“So if there is a club willing to meet all these, then I am willing to go back to the league and coach, but everything has to be taken into consideration.

“Nobody knows what is going to happen. If the conditions are good, then you will see a lot of ex-players going back to the league.” (Guardian NG)
