Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has revealed his toughest match to date.
The Egypt international has become one of the world’s biggest stars over the last few seasons and has been key to Liverpool’s revival under Jurgen Klopp. Not only did he fire the Reds to UEFA Champions League glory last season, but the Merseyside club are on the cusp of a first league title in three decades.
Surprisingly, Salah chose Egypt’s 2-1 win over Congo in October 2017 as his most challenging encounter yet.
Needing a win to confirm FIFA World Cup qualification for the first time in 28 years, the Pharaohs found themselves deadlocked at 1-1 and in need of a goal or face the difficult task of having to win away to Ghana in the final round of fixtures.
Egypt were awarded a penalty in stoppage time and with 100 million Egyptians holding their breath, the winger thumped home the winner to send the crowd into absolute delirium.
“The toughest game that I played in my career was against Congo in the 2018 World Cup qualifiers,” Salah revealed during a live broadcast with Vodafone as reported by KickOff.
“We needed to win the game to clinch World Cup qualification for the first time in 28 years with more than 70 000 fans watching.”
Qualification for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia was the country’s first since 1990 with the Pharaohs’ golden generation having failed to qualify for one single tournament. (Kick Off)
