Boboye: Accident Cost Me Olympic Gold Medal

Former Nigeria under-23 international Kennedy Boboye is feeling bad after missing the 1996 Olympic Games.

The retired striker played alongside Nwankwo Kanu, Celestine Babayaro, Jay-Jay Okocha, Taribo West and Daniel Amokachi during the Olympic qualifiers.

However, Boboye missed the Olympic Games which were hosted by Atlanta, Georgia, United States of America (USA) after being involved in a car accident.

Nigeria went on to clinch gold in the global tournament after defeating a highly-rated Argentine side in the final of the men’s final.

Boboye, who is now coaching Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) side Akwa United, stated that it remains his ‘biggest regret ever.’

“I played in all the qualifiers for the ’96 Olympics except the last game ’cos of car accident injuries,” Boboye said on his official Twitter account.

“I didn’t recover on time to make the squad to Atlanta and that ruled me out of having an Olympic gold medal around my neck.

“That’s my biggest regret ever. I thank God for life though. #TBT.”

Boboye went on to play for French side Saint-Denis Saint-Leu, German clubs Fortuna Düsseldorf and KFC Uerdingen 05, and South African outfit Manning Rangers. (African Football)
